CHAPTER ELEVEN

With a sigh of puzzled relief, Gavin closed the door behind the blonde. What Carol Spence had told him didn’t really add up. Sure, there probably was a guy named Luther Merrick who was something of a son of a bitch about further indulgence of a spoiled brat who needed her nose wiped. That much probably fit. And, if she was right about having paid $5,000 on a hare-brained masquerade, Merrick was most likely a kindly old gentleman lawyer who was just carrying out her father’s wishes.

One thing about the $5,000, though: it did explain where the money came from in his wallet, or rather in the wallet he had taken from the dead man in exchange for his own battered billfold. It fell a hell of a ways short of explaining that gun. Gavin thought of the deadly piece of iron dangling under the collection can in the lavatory of the compartment and the shudder came back into his middle. Try as he would, that gun spelled murder; it spelled it in capital letters.

He started to look over the typed pages she had left for him to study and learn. There wasn’t a great deal in them which could be called unusual, except for a complete lack of information on romantic interests. There were a number of young men mentioned by name, and the number of dates was never more than three with any of them.

Probably had one of those damned spells and scared hell out of the guy who was just trying to make out, Gavin thought. He considered briefly that the blank spots she drew under pressure could be her way of running away from a situation which was unpleasant to her—a deliberate pose. He threw that idea down the drain almost immediately. If this was a pose, it was the best goddam acting job he had ever seen. In addition to which, his medical training told him that no one could so completely freeze their bodily functions and seem to turn to marble in an instant.

“She’s sick,” he muttered. “I’ll bet on that. But I’ll be damned if I know what triggers her off.”

Mike didn’t have a chance to ruminate much further. He felt the sag in his body, and looked at the long, inviting couch. Study or not, he thought, I can’t learn any of that stuff unless I get some sleep.

He pressed the service bell for the car steward, intending to ask to be wakened at two o’clock. Mike had no watch, or rather he was too far from the shelf of a Los Angeles pawnshop to see what time it was. He estimated that it was probably around ten-thirty or eleven.

The knock came on the door almost before his finger left the service button. He turned and moved to the door, throwing it open.

“You certainly got …” He broke off as he looked into the face of Carla LeDuc.

“You were saying?” she asked insolently.

“I thought you were the porter. I just rang the bell for him.
